Grinch Night!

Tonight we had Grinch Night. As part of our advent calendar we watch How The Grinch Stole Christmas! together as a family each year. We go super retro and watch the VHS copy I grew up watching as a child. It's kind of like people who listen to records on purpose, that crackling sound is part of the experience right? I like to think I'm exposing my children to something classic and at the same time broadening their awareness of things from the past, but if I'm honest the main reason is mostly because I'm too practical to buy something I already own. Plus it's good for them to have to sit through trailers and FBI warnings that you can't just hit "next" to skip past once a year, right?

Grinch Night consists of these things:

We play the cartoon movie soundtrack while Daddy reads How The Grinch Stole Christmas (and Mommy takes annoying pictures).

And then we watch the movie! Popcorn helps a little, too!

It's my favorite because we make it so much fun and just enjoy the evening.

Plus, who doesn't love a good Dr Seuss book? As my 5 year old said today when Daddy read the title and author at the start of our night, "he writes the best stories!"

Tips for making your own Grinch Night:

Play the "Welcome Christmas" track on repeat while reading the book (you can buy just that one song if you're on a tight budget), that way when you get to the part where the Grinch pauses and puts a hand to his ear to listen you can have your kids do the same thing. They can listen as the Whos down in Who-ville sing just like the Grinch does.

Consider buying the coloring book edition of the book and let your kiddos color a page each year as they grow. (Be sure to date it as you go!) It will be fun to look back at one day when it's fully colored by your kids at all different ages!

Go green for the night! We use green bowls for popcorn and as the kids get older we'll have a strict green attire rule as well. Make it fun, whatever that means for your family's personality and the ages your kids are.

Have any fun Grinch themed ideas? Feel free to share them!
